Stanford Youth Empowerment Conference

Stanford’s Black Student Union and Black Community Services Center are pleased to announce their 11th Annual Youth Empowerment Conference. The conference theme - Show the World All your Greatness (SWAG) will be the focus of the keynote speaker, William Allen Young. Young, better known as “Uncle Frank” from the hit TV show Moesha, is the Executive Director of The Young Center, a non-profit organization in Los Angeles focused on youth development. The conference will feature a day of empowerment and skill building workshops, networking opportunities with peers from throughout the state of California , campus tours, and admission and financial aid information. Coalition for American Indians in Computing Summer College Camp: The Coalition for American Indians in Computing is seeking self-identified Native American high school sophomores and juniors who are genuinely interested in exploring computing science and its career options (Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Information Technology, GIS) for an all expense paid two week College Seminar summer camp held at Humboldt State University from July 12-24, 2010. The program will include instruction in problem solving, mathematical computation, and computer programming. Students will stay in campus housing and have a college student as a peer mentor. The mornings are devoted to class time and the afternoons and early evenings are devoted individual and group hands-on projects. Field trips will be planned to a local reservation or Native-owned business to see how technology is being used there to benefit tribal members. Students should have at least a 2.5 GPA and completed Algebra 1 before applying. Please go to www.humboldt.edu/caic for an application, or contact Janet Sclar, Project Coordinator at (707)826-3338. Gateway to College Program: Laney College is now accepting applications to its Gateway to College Program. This program is for students between the ages of 16 and 20 who will not earn a high school diploma by June 2010. Students must reside in Oakland and read at an 8th grade level or above. Cal Berkeley Retreat: Applications are now being accepted for a three-day retreat (April 16-18) at Cal Berkeley. In an effort to help students from underserved areas be motivated to apply to college, students will have the opportunity to visit a variety of classes on campus. There will be departments and majors on display for them to explore. This is an all-expenses paid retreat, except for transportation to and from Berkeley. Students will be housed in residence halls.
