Gateway to College Program: Laney College is now accepting applications to its Gateway to College Program. This program is for students between the ages of 16 and 20 who will not earn a high school diploma by June 2010. Students must reside in Oakland and read at an 8th grade level or above. Gateway to College will empower you to earn a diploma and college credit in a supportive environment. Please call (510) 986-6941 or visit www.elaney.org/ wpgateway for an application. Stanford Youth Empowerment Conference: Stanford's Black Student Union and Black Community Services Center are pleased to announce their 11th Annual Youth Empowerment Conference on April, 3, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the Stanford campus. The conference theme - Show the World All your Greatness (SWAG) will be the focus of the keynote speaker, William Allen Young. Young, better known as "Uncle Frank" from the hit TV show Moesha, is the Executive Director of The Young Center, a non-profit organization in Los Angeles focused on youth development. The conference will feature a day of empowerment and skill building workshops, networking opportunities with peers from throughout the state of California , campus tours, and admission and financial aid information. The conference is open to high school students - grades 9-12. Registration is now online at http://sites. google.com/ site/bsuyep/ home. The Youth Empowerment Conference will inspire all participants to focus on their power, purpose, and potential!

Latino Medical Student Association West Regional Conference: SAVE THE DATE for the 26th Annual LMSA (Latino Medical Student Association) West Regional Conference scheduled for April 9th and 10th at UCSF School of Medicine! If you are interested in pursuing a health profession but are in need of motivation or guidance, come check out the amazing workshops, keynote speakers and medical school admissions representatives to get all the information you need to succeed. SCHOLARSHIPS

 

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated Signa Lota Chapter 2010 Percy H. Steel Scholarship: is offering financial support to African American High School Seniors who are continuing their education at a four (4) year university or college. Eligibility: African American Graduating high school seniors residing in Alameda or Contra Costa counties and enrolled in four (4) year program at a university or college for the Fall 2010 and Winter 2011 semesters. See Ms. Reed for an application. Applications due May 1, 2010.

John and Yvonne Lawson Family Scholarship: The award is $500-$3000 per recipient, deadline is March 15, 2010, must be Female, African American, Asian, Hispanic, Native American or Pacific Islander, GPA: 3.2 or higher, need 2 recommendations and one extra curricular activity (full time), personal essay also required. See Ms. Reed for the application.

Casey Family Scholars Program: Accepting applications through OFA (www.orphan.org) until March 31st for undergraduate and graduate school support to college students who were in foster care. The program is anticipating funding for about 75 new undergraduate awards & up to ten graduate school awards for the 2010-11 academic year. Encouraging applications from eligible students of color. INTERNSHIPS/ SPECIAL PROGRAMS

 

Cal Berkeley Retreat: Applications are now being accepted for a three-day retreat (April 16-18) at Cal Berkeley. In an effort to help students from underserved areas be motivated to apply to college, students will have the opportunity to visit a variety of classes on campus. There will be departments and majors on display for them to explore. This is an all-expenses paid retreat, except for transportation to and from Berkeley. Students will be housed in residence halls. EAOP is a college prep program that provides college advising and summer programs to students that sign-up. Please pick up and return applications to the Youth Center.
